It’s only natural, everyone goes through a learning curve when they go to the gym because honestly when you start I can relate to the fact that the gym seems just as confusing as any class at uni you’ve never been to before, Or even trying to learn to drive for the first time.....
It took me a good 2 years before I got it right ! But when I did my results catapulted me to number one in my country. Ill tell you how I got into training at the gym.
I used to be the most scrawny kid in school so scrawny that I was literally the smallest person in my schools sprint team a solid 63kgs of skin and bone. I was so skinny that my ligaments couldn’t take my weight when I ran, I had to visit the doctor in order to sort my problem out.
"I still remember it now when the doc told me that I needed to build some muscles in my legs at the gym if I wanted to continue sprinting."
So I took the doctors advice and went to a smallish gym in my home town of Wellington and that’s when I got hooked. I felt strong, powerful and free when I pumped weights. Even though they were basically the same weights the women were using (No offense if your at this stage, I will make it better.)
I trained for 6
months straight, busting my ass every day of the week and guess where it got me ? I was about as big as this guy to the left.

Now as you can also see he’s a big wee fella but I was really wanting was a body more like this: 

So you can see my situation was looking pretty bleak.
It wasn’t looking in the mirror that really ticked me off though. What really got me was the fact that my friends who didn’t even go to the gym were bigger then me. Guys who started 2 months later than me , had grown bigger than me. It was the worst feeling. I was almost at the stage where I was ready to just throw in the towel and put it down to the fact that it was impossible for me to add muscle. It was my genes, the fact I was a sprinter and my doctors fault for ever thinking I could do it. My trainings became less and less as my motivation dropped.
Then one this older guy who at the time looked like Hercules to me approached me. He had the chest I wanted the arms I wanted the abs I wanted, he had the whole package.
At the time of his approach I was doing bicep curls, He introduced himself and begun to tell me about all the different things that I was doing wrong. Posture of the curl, arm position, the movements, everything basically the only thing I was actually doing right was my hands had a solid grip on the weights ;)
After he showed me, I suddenly felt a much greater burn and turned to him to thank him. We got talking and the next thing I knew a few weeks later we were training together and over the next 4 months this man would teach me something that would change my life forever !
Now I don’t know you from a bar of soap but what I do know is that being a trainer myself I am constantly having to deal with people who are sick of the following things.....
- They are Sick of being the small guy in the gym.
- Sick of popping pills and slurping potions only to have nothing happen except a wallet spring clean.
- They are Sick of seeing others at the gym grow much faster then them when it seems there only doing half the amount of work.
- You’re Sick of having to pay $60 Per hour for a personal trainer who has never had the body you want anyway.
- You’re sick of hearing new theories of what works and what doesn’t every 5 minutes at the gym! (You want to truth !)
- And You’re Sick of walking into a room with a tight top and no one turning round to stare (Well not everyone will have this one)
I know all of the feelings above though because that’s how I used to feel in the gym. It was like I felt I was different, I had been made destined to be scrawny my whole life !
Thankfully someone broke that downward spiral. I honestly do not know where I would be or what I would look like today 12 years later if that had never happened.
Well I guess I wouldn’t have served 3 years in a high security prison !
Although, on the other hand if I had gone there the way I was before I packed on 74kgs, I probably would not have been quite as safe as I was in there. Anyway that’s a whole different story :P.
What’s important is the above points are not your fault at all. There is nothing wrong with you. You can transform your body into that lean mean muscular physique that all men dream of and all women desire (Yes big guys get more action then little guys trust me).
The reason that you feel or know that you aren’t where you want to be is because you have not been taught how to train, eat and supplement the right way !

So how did my life change in just 4 months learning fromf the ripped muscular random at the gym named Frank ?
Well Frank first of all, sat me down and told me straight up that I was asleep ! Asleep I asked?
Yes asleep, I was in my own dream world thinking that every piece of information out there on the internet, in the magazines, from the trainers in the gym was fact and I trained like it too.
Frank told me that it was time for me to wake up to the fact that everyone was making money out of my failures and that I needed to start learning what the gym is really about and how the guys on the cover of those magazines really do it.
I was ready.
Just like you I was Sick too, Sick of all the continual dead ends presenting themselves with every new training and diet regime the magazines and trainers said would work.
So at first I was a sceptic of Frank to but he was the first one to tell me about the true intentions of the magazines and even the trainers.
Over the next 4 months, he took me under his wing and trained me using a formula very few knew about at the gym.
To my shock over those 4 months I packed on 20kgs and shot from 63kgs to a whopping (for me) 83kgs.
Everyone thought I was on the roids, even my very own mother started checking my shoulders for needle marks. They couldn’t believe that I could put on no muscle what so ever for 2 years then in 4 months almost double in size.
I loved it, the attention I started to get rocked to say the least. Before I knew it I was Mr Teen NZ winning my first show then by the age of 21 be Mr New Zealand and Mr Australasia competing against the best in the world. I loved running round onstage in my undies !

Soon after I started showing my mates how I train and they started packing on the pounds like crazy too, It was great !

Well, in the peek of my performance I was growing like crazy and reaching new heights with my bodybuilding. I was almost able to touch a place in Olympia when the cops broke down my door and came running in.
They seized a heck of a lot of Fantasy that I had been using to help my training (you don’t want to know) and next thing I knew my face was splattered everywhere all over the news and in the paper. Everyone knew me suddenly as King Kong to a druggie.
I was sentenced to 10 years in Prison and sent to a high security prison where the closest thing I could get to protein was milk powder and my usual 14 meals a day was cut down to 3.
The shock was immense !
After 8 years of hard training and success I was suddenly faced with the biggest mountain I have ever had to climb with no access to weights or training facilities I faced loosing all my hard work or improvising.
So that’s what I did, the other inmates were more then happy to help and train with me to using our own body weight and home made weights we began training.
